Niklas Schmidt was born in Cologne in 1958. The winner of many prestigious music competitions, in 1980 he founded the “Trio Fontenay”, an ensemble that has enjoyed an extraordinary reputation in the music world since its inception. Together with the trio, he recorded nearly the entire literature for the genre on CD for Teldec, EMI Electrola and Philips; most of these recordings have received national and international awards, including the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis 1994 for the complete recordings of the Beethoven trios and the Diapson d’Or.

The Trio Fontenay has performed in the greatest concert halls of the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Salle Gaveau in Paris, Wigmore Hall, Queen Elisabeth Hall and Royal Festival Hall in London, and the Herkulessaal in Munich and it has appeared at many international festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, the Festival de Montpellier, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Festival de Montréal, as well as the Kissinger Summer and the Schubertiade in Austria. Since its American debut in 1986, the ensemble has also embarked upon one or two large USA tours each year. A special honor for the three musicians was the ensemble’s appointment to the post of “Trio en Résidence au Châtelet” in Paris. At the end of 1997, Niklas Schmidt retired as cellist from the ensemble.

Since 1987, Professor Schmidt has taught cello at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater (Academy of Music and Theater) in Hamburg where he also heads the String Department. Over the course of the years, he has built up chamber music activities at the Hochschule and since 1997 holds the position of Professor of Chamber Music. In addition to these responsibilities, he is regularly invited to hold master classes throughout the world - from Barcelona, Nice, Montréal and New York to Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Niklas Schmidt has been appearing more frequently as a soloist as well as in various chamber music formations. With Menahem Pressler, he has performed Schubert’s “Arpeggione Sonata” in Washington, D.C. and the Beethoven sonatas in Hamburg. Together with members of the Alban Berg, Cleveland, Guarneri and Juilliard quartets, he has performed the Schubert String Quintet. Recent appearances with orchestra have included frequent performances of the two Haydn concertos. His many other collaborators include Joseph Kalichstein, the Auryn and Fine Arts quartets, and the harpsichordist Menno van Delft with whom he will record the Bach Viola da Gamba Sonatas in 2011.

Niklas Schmidt is also the initiator and idea generator of the exceptional Hamburg Chamber Music Series “Chamber Concerts in the Mozartsaal” during which, since September 1999, contemporary composers and world renowned ensembles present the chamber music literature in its most multifarious forms.

Niklas Schmidt is the director of the “International Mendelssohn Summer School Festival” in Hamburg that will be taking place for the fifth time in 2011. The International Chamber Music Competition Hamburg ICMC, which he launched in 2009, will be held again in collaboration with NDR Kultur in 2012. Schmidt has also started his own label with the name Fontenay Classics International FCI which released its first two CDs in November 2010.

Niklas Schmidt wurde 1958 in Köln geboren. 1980 gründete der vielfache Gewinner renommierter Musikwettbewerbe das "Trio Fontenay", das seit dem in der Musikwelt einen außergewöhnlichen Ruf genießt. Für die Schallplattenfirmen Teldec, EMI Electrola und Philips hat er mit dem Trio fast die gesamte Trio-Literatur auf CD eingespielt; die meisten der Aufnahmen erhielten nationale und internationale Auszeichnungen, u.a. Deutscher Schallplattenpreis 1994 für die Gesamteinspielung der Beethoven-Trios und den Diapason d’Or.

Das Trio Fontenay gastierte in den bedeutendsten Sälen der Welt u.a. in der Carnegie Hall in New York, im Salle Gaveau in Paris, in der Wigmore Hall, Queen Elisabeth Hall, Royal Festival Hall in London und im Herkulessaal in München und konzertierte bei internationalen Festivals, u.a. bei den Salzburger Festspielen, dem Festival de Montpellier, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival und dem Festival de Montréal sowie beim Kissinger Sommer und der Schubertiade in Österreich. Seit seinem Amerika-Debüt 1986 unternahm das Ensemble außerdem jährlich ein bis zwei große USA-Tourneen. Eine besondere Auszeichnung für die drei Musiker war auch die Ernennung des Ensembles zum „Trio en Résidence au Châtelet“ in Paris. Ende 1997 schied Niklas Schmidt als Cellist aus dem Ensemble aus.

Seit 1987 lehrt Prof. Schmidt Violoncello an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg und leitet dort die Streicherabteilung. Er hat mit den Jahren die Kammermusikarbeit an der Hochschule aufgebaut, und ist seit 1997 Professor für Kammermusik. Außerdem wird er regelmäßig zu Kursen in aller Welt eingeladen, u.a. in Barcelona, Nice, Montréal, New York, Hongkong und Shanghai.

Vermehrt tritt er solistisch aber auch in unterschiedlichen Kammermusik-Formationen auf. Mit Menahem Pressler spielte er die „Arpeggione“-Sonate in Washington D.C. und in Hamburg die Beethoven-Sonaten. Mit Mitgliedern der Quartette Alban Berg, Cleveland, Guarneri und Juilliard spielte er das Schubert-Streichquintett. Mit Orchester spielte er zuletzt häufiger die beiden Haydn-Konzerte. Weitere Partner sind Joseph Kalichstein, die Quartette Auryn und Fine Arts, der Cembalist Menno van Delft, mit dem er die Gambensonaten von Bach 2011 einspielen wird, und viele andere.

Außerdem ist Niklas Schmidt Initiator und Ideengeber der außergewöhnlichen Hamburger Kammermusikreihe „Kammerkonzerte im Mozartsaal“, in der seit September 1999 zeitgenössische Komponisten und weltweit renommierte Ensembles die Vielseitigkeit der Kammermusik-Literatur präsentieren.

Er ist Direktor des „International Mendelssohn Summer School Festivals“ in Hamburg, welches 2011 zum fünften Mal stattfindet. 2009 fand zum ersten Mal der Internationale Kammermusikwettbewerb Hamburg ICMC statt, den er 2012 zusammen mit NDR Kultur neuerlich austragen wird. Außerdem gründete er 2010 sein eigenes Label mit dem Namen Fontenay Classics International FCI, bei dem die ersten beiden Cds im November erschienen sind.
