Piano
François François Chaplin trained at the Paris
Conservatoire (CNSM) with the Bulgarian pianist
Ventsislav Yankoff and with Jacqueline Robin (accompaniment
and chamber music), and was unanimously awarded first
prizes for piano and chamber music. He then followed the advanced course
with Jean-Claude Pennetier.
In 1987, he won the International Piano Competition in Senigallia (Italy),
and received in 1989 the Mozart and Robert Casadesus
Prizes at the International Competition in Cleveland. Those distinctions are
the start of a brilliant
international career.
His recording of Debussy’s complete piano works has been unanimously
acclaimed by the international press and has reaped
many awards (Diapason d’Or, ffff Télérama, Award BBC Magazine). It is
already regarded internationally as a reference.
His Debussy’s recording is internationally-renowned.
François Chaplin now appears as a soloist in many of the world’s capitals,
including Tokyo, London, Paris, Berlin, Moscow and
Mexico, to name but a few, and with many fine orchestras such as the Japan
Philharmonic, the Saint Petersbourg Philharmonic and
the renowned French national orchestras. He appears regularly at important
festivals, including La Roque-d’Anthéron, Saint-
Bertrand-de-Comminges, the Chopin Festival at Paris Bagatelle,
the Chopin Festival at Nohant (Rencontres Internationales), Pontlevoy,
Reims (Les Flâneries Musicales), Cervantino (Mexico),
Yokohama (Japan), Saint Petersbourg, Riga, Kazakstan, etc.
In chamber music, François Chaplin is used to perform with quatuors like
Talich Quartet, Elysées, Psophos and Debussy. He
collaborates with cellists like François Salque, Emmanuelle Bertrand and
pianists like Cedric Tiberghien, Marie-Joseph Jude
and the clarinetist Patrick Messina.
His concerts and recordings have met with great critical acclaim, and he has
been described as “one of the most original and
engaging of all French pianists”. His sumptuous sound, great expressiveness
and feeling, and his intelligence as an artist enable
him to understand and bring out the sombre moods of Brahms, the whimsicality
of Schumann, the brightness of Debussy, and the
personality of Mozart, Poulenc and others.
François Chaplin’s other recordings include works by Chopin (Ballades,
Barcarolle, Berceuse), Schumann (Kreisleriana,
Kinderszenen), Poulenc (works for two pianos with Alexandre Tharaud), Carl
Philipp Emanuel Bach (sonatas) and Mozart (concertos,
chamber version).
On the occasion of the bicentenary of Chopin’s birth, François Chaplin
recorded the complete Nocturnes (label Zig-Zag
Territoires/Harmonia Mundi) in March 2010, acclaimed by critics (ffff
Télérama) and labellised « Chopin 2010 en France ».
For this event, François Chaplin performed on the most famous international
stages. He will soon play in Bonn, Vienne, Amsterdam,
Heidelberg, London, Venice, Washington, Moscow...
Francois Chaplin is together a piano Professor at the Versailles National
Music Conservatory and head of Master Class of french
music in various foreign countries, notably at the Conservatory of St
Petersburg, at the University of Montreal and in
Kazakhstan, Norway and Japan.

François Chaplin suit la formation du pianiste bulgare Ventsislav Yankoff au
Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, ainsi que la classe
d’accompagnement et musique de chambre avec Jacqueline Robin, et obtient ses
Premiers Prix de piano (1er nommé en 1987) et musique de chambre. Il
poursuit ensuite ses études dans le cadre du cycle spécialisé chez
Jean-Claude Pennetier.
Lauréat du Concours International de Senigallia, il remporte les Prix Mozart
et Robert Casadesus au Concours International de Cleveland en 1989. Ces
distinctions marquent le point de départ d’une active et brillante carrière
internationale.
Il est invité en soliste dans le monde entier (Tokyo, Berlin, Moscou, Saint
Petersbourg, Riga, Paris, Almati, Mexico…) et par de nombreux orchestres,
comme l'Orchestre National de Lille, L'orchestre Philharmonique de Saint
Petersbourg, le Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, l'Ensemble Orchestral de
Paris, l'Orchestre National de Lorraine, l'Orchestre Colonne, etc. Il
participe régulièrement à de nombreux festivals prestigieux comme La
Roque-d'Anthéron, le Festival de Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, les Rencontres
internationales de Nohant (Chopin), le Festival International de Pontlevoy,
Les Flâneries Musicales de Reims, Piano en Valois, le Festival Chopin à
Paris Bagatelle, le Festival international de Cervantino au Mexique, le
Festival international de Yokohama au Japon, etc.
L'intégrale des Nocturnes de Chopin a été unanimement salué par la presse (
ffff de Télérama , label 2010 du Ministère de la culture, Maestro Pianiste,
etc) ainsi que l’enregistrement de l’intégrale de l’œuvre de Debussy
(Diapason d’Or, ffff de Télérama , Award BBC Magazine à Londres, Allemagne,
etc.) qui fait déjà figure de référence dans le monde entier.
Dans sa discographie, on découvre également un disque Chopin (Ballades,
Barcarolle, Berceuse) salué par la presse, un Schumann (Kreisleriana, Scènes
d’enfants), Poulenc (l’œuvre pour deux pianos avec Alexandre Tharaud), Carl
Philipp Emanuel Bach ( récompensé d’un Award BBC ) et un disque Mozart avec
deux concertos (version quatuor à cordes).
Sa sonorité somptueuse aux mille inflexions, son intelligence musicale et
son sens du phrasé, en font d’emblée l’interprète des concertos de Mozart,
des humeurs sombres de Brahms ou fantasques de Schumann, tout comme des
lumières de Debussy. En musique de chambre, François Chaplin joue
régulièrement avec les quatuors Talich, Debussy, Elysées, les
violoncellistes François Salque, Emmanuelle Bertrand, les pianistes Cédric
Tiberghien, Marie-Josèphe Jude et le clarinettiste Patrick Messina.
François Chaplin est également professeur de piano au CRR de Versailles et
donne des master classes de musique Française à l'étranger , notamment au
conservatoire de Saint Petersbourg , à l'université de Montréal, en Norvège,
au Japon.
